Pinterest

Pinterest is not completely unfamiliar to me, however I did close my account…only to reopen for this class.  There are a wealth of valuable teacher resources on Pinterest, however as with most PLN’s….they are extremely time consuming, especially for a first year teacher.  I love the hands on math ideas that Pinterest has to offer.  There are so many wonderful teachers who love to share what they create.  These creations benefit so many teachers, including me!  The most difficult aspect with PInterest is staying on task with what you are actually looking for.  It is easily distracting since there are so many resources.  I would highly recommend this website and hope to be able to utilize it more once I have a little more free time.

Digital Media Response

Digital Media: New Learners of the 21st Century addresses the vital question of  how extraordinary educators are utilizing digital media and interactive practices to engage heir students’ curiosity, help them become civically engaged, , and empower them to direct their own learning.

The Science Leadership academy that was highlighted in the video is exciting since it a program utilized locally in Washington, D.C.  It is sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution, which is responsible for so many wonderful educational opportunities.  Students are given the opportunity to physically manipulate and interpret a scavenger hunt that is digitally produced.  These scavenger hunt activities can be implemented in variety of locations and can focus on the important geographical or historical features of a specific region such as Philadelphia or Chicago.

Digital media is bridging the gap between content knowledge and the antiquated methodology the majority of us are familiar with.  In my opinion, it is critical for educators to become familiar with technology in the classroom since this generation is expecting to use these advancements to further their education.
